#GlobalTalk Greetings received during #MARCHintosh
2025!
This was a fun journey for the month of March 2025. I configured GlobalTalk initially on a 100mb ZIP disk for my Macintosh SE. I ran into a lot of issues as the premade disk image of system 7.1 I was using was larger than the zip disk. I DD'd it over to the zip from my Macbook Air M2. It booted and I was able to install my ethernet driver (Farallon EtherMac SE) but most of the applications were corrupted. Once I got my share set up and I was on the network, I created a bunch of aliases in the share, requesting anyone who seen it, to upload SimpleText if possible. Scott Small seen it and gave me a copy. This got me by as I was able to view simpletext documents from shares. I couldn't do much else though in this state. I bought a BlueSCSI, and added the prebuilt 7.1 image to that. Then I DD'd the 7.0 zip disk I had been using for years as the SE's boot disk. Added that image to to the BlueSCSI and booted the mac from the 7.1 image. Copied over all my stuff, PICT files, (gotta have the Snow app), Photoshop 1.0,some icons, etc. Got my ethernet drivers installed and reconfigured my share. Added all the globaltalk IPs from the spreadsheet and I was good to go. Some things I couldn't open as 7.1 combined with AIR router running were taxing my SE's 4MB of RAM. I set up my B&W G3 in another room and installed System 8.6 on it. It immediately found the appletalk network and more importantly saw all of the GlobalTalk nodes! Some of you have connected to it's share over the network as well. I plan on trying to increase the speed of my SE's network by (sounds weird here but) adding a slower 1/10 ethernet switch in between the mac and my router. I think the gigabit might be slowing it down actually. If that doesn't make a difference I'm going to try the WIFI on the BlueSCSI and see if thats any faster. I know wifi generally doesnt like appletalk though. Thanks for visiting my slow shares for MARCHintosh! I plan on keeping my node up as long as possible.
